Incredible stuff! Tens of thousands of fans in and around the Red Bull Ring have ensured a sensational atmosphere already.
MotoGP rookie Jorge Martin is setting off a real rocket in his Ducati at Spielberg these days. After getting pole position and a win at last weekend’s Styrian GP, the Spaniard is again in first place – and he has crowned his double pole with an all-time lap record of 1:22.643 minutes. That’s a record that will surely never be beaten on the current Red Bull Ring layout.
Jorge Martin span out of FP3, had to scrape his way into the all-decisive Q2 in Q1 but still had the nerve to snatch the fastest ever MotoGP lap at the Red Bull Ring, and with it pole position for the Bitci Motorcycle Grand Prix of Austria 2021. The Spaniard is to start on the front row together with his Ducati team-mate Francesco Bagnaia and world championship leader Fabio Quartararo (Yamaha). KTM’s Miguel Oliveira and Brad Binder will start the race from ninth and tenth.
Jorge Martin (ESP/Ducati): “The crash in FP3 was anything other than ideal. I could handle the pressure though and FP4 was better. I was very nervous in Q1. The first stint wasn’t so good, so I put everything into the second. I surprised myself with the first sector, and it was clear to me that I could ride to the pole. I still had some doubts going into the final turn, but after crossing the finishing line I was really impressed. The knee is still causing problems, but I am happy and hope that the win comes off tomorrow!”
Fabio Quartararo (FRA/Yamaha): “I would have loved to have pole position – it’s a shame! I had problems with acceleration. I am pretty disappointed, but Jorge was just faster. I can’t complain about ending up on the front row though.”
Francesco Bagnaia (ITA/Ducati): “I have done what I had to do by getting a place on the front row. I didn’t have enough for pole, as I had problems with the rear tyre, and I slid too much. It was better in the morning, but in the afternoon I couldn’t get to grips with it. I still feel strong and confident for the race.”
After the battle for thousandths of a second on the circuit, fans saw a sensational side programme on Saturday with spectacular shows. From a Freestyle Motocross Show to the Aras Freestyle stunt show right in front of the grandstands, it’s all happening at the Spielberg MotoGP Bike City before the grand finale in Spielberg!
